This issue emphasizes the importance of semiconductors within the automobile industry, particularly in the context of electrifying the most recent iterations of cars. In the last few years, semiconductor products such as GaAs (gallium arsenide) and, more recently, wide band gap materials such as SiC (silicon carbide) and GaN (gallium nitride) have replaced silicon in a large variety of applications. They are accelerating e-mobility and enabling large-scale deployment of electric vehicles (EVs). Another topic of this newsletter is ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors. With bandgap energies well above those of GaN (3.4 eV) and SiC (3.2 eV), they represent a new frontier in semiconductor materials, promising to improve the overall features of WBG even further.
